
A local news pioneer has passed away in Boston. John Henning, original anchor of the “new” Channel 5, has died at age 73 according to a spokesperson for the family.
According to thebostonchannel.com, Henning was admitted to Mass General Hospital on July 4th for treatment and never fully recovered.
After anchoring News 5 on the then-new WCVB-TV, Henning moved on to anchor at WNAC-TV (now WHDH), and eventually landed at WBZ-TV in 1982. He contributed to the station following his retirement in 2003.
Henning was inducted to the Massachusetts Broadcasters’ Hall of Fame in 2009.
