The Big Question: What’s Wrong With This Picture?

btvn noticed this on tonight’s broadcast, but is it even worth mentioning or is it a sign of things to come?

  • From the people who took Channel 4 Eyewitness News and turned it into News 4 New England, WBZ News 4, WBZ 4 News, CBS 4 News, then decided to go back to their legendary call letters that they’ve built a brand on… I hope they aren’t returning to CBS4. Was a huge failure before, and made the newscast feel like it was out-of-market.

WBZ has made great gains in promoting the calls. Their promotion is revered throughout the industry. Hopefully…just hopefully, this is a fluke thing. Sadly, something tells me it isn’t.

  • As I said on the other site, hopefully they know better than to change their branding back to CBS4. I think we would all agree that that’s an experiment not worth repeating and I can’t imagine many at CBS think it is either.

That being said I would still adopt the CBS o&o graphics package & enforcer ng2. As was said at the other site, the Minnesota-esque look that BZ has now is clean, but it’s like decaf in comparison to their competition. The o&o look isn’t perfect by any means, but it does look pretty sharp in HD and a little change to their presentation probably wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world at this juncture.

..Just as an aside, if it turns out that CBS does decide to leave BZ’s graphics alone then you have to wonder what the thought process was in incorporating the CBS4 logo onto the mic flag. It looks totally out of place considering that it’s the only place in their entire production that they even have the “4″. Changing their logo to something like this would have been a good move if it was that important to them: http://cbsminnesota.files.wordpress.com/2010/10/wcco-eye4-logo.png?w=0&h=35&crop=1

  • Truthfully, the WBZ Channel 4 that we all remember growing up is almost gone now. No offense, but other than Jack Williams there is no other remaining connection on that station to its past when it regularly won both ratings and awards. Long story short, whether they want to go by WBZ-4 or CBS-4, it’s not going to make them any better or worse as a news organization, nor will it get more viewers to watch them. They may not be Ch. 7, but they’re an eternity away from Ch. 5.

A poster at the above site is claiming that BZ will be switching to the CBS o&o look next week or the following week.

  • Jack Williams and Barry Burbank is WBZ!
