‘BZ says Goodbye to 1999 with New Set

WBZ has finally replaced their “WBZ 4 News”-era set.  Starting tonight at 5 p.m., a brand new, state-of-the-art news studio will debut.

News Director John Verilli, in an interview with the Herald, remarks “The new set is so much bigger and we have a lot more options.”  The previous set was much smaller and was further divided when the Movie Loft set was constructed in the same area.

The highlights of the new set include high-efficiency LED lights, high-definition TV monitors, and a myriad of places to do stand-ups, sit-downs, and all of the hallmarks of a Channel 4 newscast.

The new set will also mark the debut of graphics and news music more in line with the other CBS owned-and-operated stations.  This time, however, the WBZ brand name will continue to be used.

  • I saw there WBZ’s new look and I like it the graphics look great at least to me I watch WBZ News and I happy to see there new look

  • For my taste, everything about their new look is a step up. The set, most portions of the graphics and the music. There are certain features in the old graphics package that I found very admirable, but the o&o stuff just looks so much sharper in HD.

As for the set, well I always found the set that they modified 3-4 years ago to be a bit of an eye sore. In fairness I’m guessing they didn’t have a massive budget to work with and that was pretty evident with the final result. The new set reminds me a lot of the one WCBS debuted a couple of months ago, and to me it’s by far the nicest in Boston.

As for music, pride collection had grown completely stale and aggravating. That’s partially due to the fact that BZ used the same cuts (loud, annoying open aside) for years without changing things up. I’ve always been sort of partial to enforcer, although I wish BZ had picked some better cuts such as using WCBS’ night open for their PM news rather than the cut they’ve been using. Overall though a nice step up.
