New Face at 9: Walcott Jumps from Milwaukee to ‘MUR

Popular Today’s TMJ4 anchor and reporter Shelley Walcott has left the Milwaukee NBC affil for a spot as primary anchor at New Hampshire’s WMUR.  The move was reported on her Twitter page recently, with Walcott saying:

Hi all: Wanted to announce I am leaving TMJ4 at the end of next week. Have accepted a main anchor job in New Hampshire. Bittersweet day!

Walcott joined the station in 2005 after stints in Columbus, Montreal, and on CNN in Atlanta.  TMJ4 general manager Steve Wexler commented on her departure, remarking, “Shelley is a very talented anchor and reporter, we’re going to miss her, but we are also very excited for her. She’ll be the main anchor on her new station and closer to her family.”  No word on her first day at channel 9.

9 Becomes the News

A truck plowed into the Portsmouth, New Hampshire, bureau of WMUR last week.  The driver and passenger were taken to the hospital, neither of them were wearing seatbelts.

According to wmur.com, the crash happened at 12:30 p.m. on December 16th after the car swerved off the road and into the building that houses condominiums, parking, and their Portsmouth bureau.

The cause of the crash is unknown, but witnesses report that a group of pedestrians may have startled the driver.  The vehicle, a Chevrolet Tahoe, sustained significant front-end damage as a result of the collision with the building.

WBIN dumps affiliation, myNetworkTV to 38?

TV38 may soon be showing programming from MyNetworkTV.  Broadcasting and Cable is reporting that WBIN, the station formerly known as WZMY, will be ending its four year relationship with the network in order to focus on locally produced programming.  A possible replacement for the network appears to be WSBK.  The results of this speculation will come to light in time.

If you recall, then-independent WZMY secured the MyNetworkTV affiliation because it had been branding itself as “MyTV” since 2004.  No word on the fate of the TV38 News at 9pm if this change comes to fruition.

ShootingStar Dumps WZMY; Calls Changing too

ShootingStar Broadcasting has sold Derry, New Hampshire-based WZMY to Carlisle One Media.  MyTV New England, which had been owned by ShootingStar since 2004, made the announcement last week.

Carlisle One Media, based in New Hampshire, is run by former-Senate candidate Bill Binnie.  He has also purchased three other stations in New Hampshire, all of them low-power.  Carlisle One plans to change the call sign to WBIN and begin introducing locally-produced programming in the summer.  Furthermore, he plans to keep the affiliations with both MyNetworkTV and Universal Sports Network.

“Fox and NBC Sports are great partners and we are looking forward to working with them,” Binnie remarked.  “In addition, we are excited to be the exclusive provider of Universal Sports in the greater Boston market. We are committed to working hard to fully realize the unique potential of this station in the coming years.”

The station was purchased for $28 million in 2004 by ShootingStar Broadcasting.  The station soon relaunched as MyTV, unrelated to the current network.  When Fox announced the creation of MyNetworkTV, WZMY considered a lawsuit but ultimately joined the network in late-2006.  After letting longtime meteorologist Al Kaprelian go, the station was put under agreement to be managed by New Age Media.  The state of that agreement is yet to be known.
